Hilltop T-Line Now Open

Accessibility to your favorite Hilltop locations just got easier!

“THE LINK IS FINALLY OPEN!”

That was the resounding feeling at the grand opening ceremony for the Hilltop Link Extension (T-Line) on September 16th. Hilltop families, curious citizens, transit workers, and city officials gathered under a huge white tent under a clear blue sky outside of the 1105 building, home of TUPAC (Tacoma Urban Performing Arts Center) to hear from local leaders that helped get the project off the ground and into the community. In addition to the remarks from elected officials, there was a beautiful dance performance by the talented TUPAC students and a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the train. Limited edition “I RODE DAY 1” pins and stickers were given out along with ORCA cards preloaded with 10 dollars of fares.

Then it was all aboard! Community members got to ride the train for free as they explored the expanded destinations that are now within reach of the Hilltop and beyond. It was a beautiful day to celebrate the new addition to the neighborhood and the community was buzzing with excitement. Train Ambassadors dressed in various costumes (Candy Princess, Sailor, and Mechanic, to name a few) were aboard the trains welcoming riders and giving commuters local history and trivia about the landmarks as the train traveled from Hilltop through Stadium District and to the Tacoma Dome.

The journey to this day was not always easy. Years of closures and construction delays created frustration and difficulties for residents and local businesses. Reaching this point is a testament to the stamina and resolve of our Hilltop Community. With the new line now open, there is hope in the community that these difficulties are in the past and a new phase of progress and prosperity will come to the neighborhood; more shoppers picking up clothes at Mr. Macs, getting haircuts at Sam and Terry’s or Peoples Barbershop, purchasing or repairing bikes at 2nd Cycle, and enjoying great food and drinks at 1111, Pho King, or Red Elm and sweet treats at Johnson’s.

The opening of the line represents a wonderful opportunity for Hilltop business to prosper and Hilltop citizens to show off why we proudly call this place home. It must be noted that the community has fears that the line could mean more rapid gentrification to a historically diverse neighborhood that is already facing major changes and displacement. We must move forward together and remain vigilant and resolute that amidst change, it is essential that Hilltop retain its distinct flavor that was built by generations before and is upheld by active citizens and local artists to this day.
